Overview
Welcome to Extreme Edge Panmure, New Zealand’s largest and most exciting indoor rock climbing centre.
Housed in a spectacular four-storey high, quarter-acre-sized former aircraft hangar, this Auckland institution offers an unmatched climbing experience for everyone, from first-timers and families to elite athletes.
Whether you're looking for a fun family day out, a challenging new fitness routine, or a place to train for your next big ascent, Extreme Edge has you covered.
Operated by a team of passionate climbers, the centre is renowned for its vast scale and diverse range of activities.
It features three distinct zones: the main arena with over 200 roped climbs, an expansive bouldering section for rope-free challenges, and the incredible ClimbZone and AdventureLand areas designed specifically for kids.
It’s this variety that makes Extreme Edge Panmure a premier destination for adventure seekers in Auckland.
What to Expect
Your adventure begins the moment you walk into the colossal hangar. After signing a standard waiver, you'll get fitted for your harness and climbing shoes (if you need to hire them).
First-timers receive a comprehensive safety briefing from the friendly staff, who will teach you how to use the equipment and belay (hold the ropes) for a partner safely, ensuring you feel confident before you start climbing.
The main climbing hall is a breathtaking sight, with walls soaring up to 20 metres high.
With over 200 unique routes, there are colourful, jug-filled climbs perfect for beginners, as well as complex, overhanging challenges that will test the most experienced climbers.
You can choose between top-roping (where the rope is already anchored at the top) and lead climbing for an extra challenge.
For those who prefer rope-free climbing, the dedicated bouldering area offers a huge range of problems to solve, with thick crash mats below for safety.
For families, the ClimbZone is the star attraction. This vibrant, colourful area features a host of themed climbing walls with automatic belay systems.
These clever devices take up the slack as you climb and lower you gently back to the ground, meaning parents can supervise without needing to learn the ropes.
Younger children (typically under 7) will also love AdventureLand, a pirate-themed soft play area with tunnels, slides, and bridges to explore.

To make the most of your climbing session, it's a good idea to come prepared. We recommend bringing the following items:
- Comfortable Clothing: Wear non-restrictive activewear, such as shorts, leggings, or trackpants, that you can move freely in.
- Footwear: If you don't want to hire shoes, a pair of snug-fitting trainers will suffice for your first time.
- Socks: These are required if you are hiring climbing shoes.
- Water Bottle: Stay hydrated! There are water fountains available for refills.
- Snacks: A day pass is for the whole day, so you might want to bring some snacks to refuel.
Safety & Requirements
Safety is the top priority at Extreme Edge. All visitors who wish to climb must complete a waiver form before they start. A staff-led safety orientation is mandatory for all first-time visitors to ensure you understand the rules and how to use the gear correctly.
- Age Limit: There is no strict minimum age, and kids as young as four can often participate in ClimbZone. Children must be old enough to fit safely into a climbing harness. All children under 14 must be actively supervised by an adult.
- Waiver: A waiver must be signed by all participants, or by a legal guardian for those under 18.
- Fitness Level: A basic level of fitness is helpful, but not required. With a wide range of beginner routes, almost anyone can give it a go.
Getting There
Extreme Edge is conveniently located in the Auckland suburb of Panmure and is easy to reach by car or public transport.
- Address: 40 Morrin Road, Panmure, Auckland 1072.
- By Car: There is plenty of free, on-site parking available right outside the building.
- By Public Transport: The centre is a short walk (around 15-20 minutes) or a quick bus ride from the Panmure Train Station, which serves the Eastern Line and is a major bus interchange.
Best Time to Visit
As an indoor venue, Extreme Edge is the perfect all-weather activity, making it a great choice for rainy Auckland days. To avoid the biggest crowds, try to visit on a weekday afternoon.
Weekday evenings from 5pm onwards, weekends, and school holidays are the busiest periods. If you're planning a weekend visit, arriving earlier in the day is your best bet for a quieter experience.
Tips & Insider Knowledge
Make your visit even better with these handy tips. For your first visit, don't be afraid to try everything! Spend some time on the roped climbs in the main arena, and then head over to the bouldering section to experience a different style of climbing. The problems are shorter but can be more powerful and technical.
For families, the auto-belay devices in the ClimbZone are a game-changer, allowing kids to climb safely and independently while you supervise and encourage them from the ground.
If you're looking to meet other climbers or improve your skills, check out the regular social nights and coaching clinics that Extreme Edge offers. These are a great way to become part of Auckland's vibrant climbing community.
