Overview of the Auckland Marathon
The Barfoot & Thompson Runaway Auckland Marathon, presented by ASICS, is New Zealand's largest and most iconic running festival.
Held annually in the City of Sails, the event offers participants a world-class running experience through the heart of Auckland.
Its most famous feature is the unparalleled opportunity to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge, providing breathtaking views of the Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto Island.
Organised by IRONMAN, this major event attracts thousands of local and international runners to take on one of five different race distances, culminating in a vibrant finish line festival at Victoria Park.
It's more than just a race; it's a celebration of running, community, and the stunning Auckland landscape.

History & Event Records
The modern iteration of the Auckland Marathon, featuring the Harbour Bridge crossing, was established in 1992 and has since grown into a cornerstone of the New Zealand running calendar. The event is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2026, marking a long history of inspiring and challenging runners.
The current course records are long-standing and represent elite performances on the demanding Auckland course.
- Men's Record: 2:14:03 – Phil Costley (1997)
- Women's Record: 2:38:47 – Gabrielle O'Rourke (1999)
Thousands of runners participate each year, with finisher numbers for the full marathon typically ranging between 1,500 and 2,000, making it a truly mass-participation event that captures the spirit of the city.
Getting There
The event's logistics involve multiple start lines and a central finish line, with extensive road closures across the city. The finish line and main event hub are located at Victoria Park, on Fanshawe Street in the Auckland CBD. The Marathon and Half Marathon start on King Edward Parade in Devonport.
Due to the scale of the event, parking is extremely limited and not recommended. All participants and spectators are strongly encouraged to use public transport. The event organisers typically provide detailed transport plans and special event services, which are published on the official website closer to race day.
Junior Development: The Kids Marathon
The Barfoot & Thompson Kids Marathon provides a fantastic opportunity for children to be part of the big day. The 2.2km course is designed to be safe, fun, and achievable for young runners.
Open to children aged between 5 and 12 years old, the race takes place around Victoria Park, allowing kids to experience the excitement of the main finish line and receive their own finisher's medal.
It's an excellent introduction to running events and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle from a young age.
